12,000 steps to healthy children
American College of Sports Medicine
Share

Children and teens should walk about 12,000 steps per day to maintain a healthy level of physical activity, according to a study published in the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. Currently, many measures of children's physical activity rely on self-reporting techniques that often prove to be unreliable. Schools, parks negotiate artificial turf agreement
Howard County Times
Share

Artificial turf fields are coming to two Howard County, Md., high schools this summer under a one-time, $4 million state grant generated from an increase in the state alcohol tax. If the joint use agreement is approved, the Department of Recreation and Parks has agreed to build a third artificial turf field this summer at Howard High and add three more per year at other high schools until all have fields, which would be used jointly by the schools and the county's recreational sports leagues. Under a proposed agreement, parks officials would be in charge of scheduling all field use — including high school sports — but high school use would have first priority in the scheduling.
